After 5 years of working in education I’ve finally made a leap of faith an decided to pursue a Masters of Education in Digital Learning and Leading from Lamar University. I am a native Houstonian and studied broadcast journalism with a minor in Mexican-American studies from the University of Houston. Reading, writing, and helping people is my thing. For me, it was no surprise that I switched gears and became an educator. Those that know me well understood that I’ve always been an advocate for education so teaching just seemed natural. I quickly realized that the opportunity was more than just a J.O.B. I have gained more than I could imagine from the experiences inside my classroom. Personal growth, laughter, insight, tears, perspective, obstacles, family. It’s where all the magic happens and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. What I would do instead is work relentlessly at improving the academic environment for my students. In Texas, we over emphasize standardize testing, spend lots of money on training teachers about the latest “learning strategies” (which change frequently), and are more concerned about numeric scores rather than abilities and growth.
As a wife, daughter, sister and mother of three precious souls, I continue to advocate for high quality education for all students in public schools with an emphasis in meaningful integrated technology. Digital Learning is one of the most underestimated skills in public schools. I’m on a mission to share the possibilities of enhancing the academic environment for students through digital learning and leading.
